For the 15th consecutive year, CHI Memorial has been named Best Hospital in the Chattanooga Times Free Press' Annual Best of the Best Awards. CHI Memorial's Emergency Department was named Best ED for the 13th year. CHI Memorial was also named Best Healthcare Employer. CHI Memorial Foundation's annual Pink! gala was named Best Fundraising Event. Dr. Rachel Labovitz was named Best General Practice Doctor, and CHI Memorial Pediatric Diagnostic Associates was named Best Pediatrician.

Best Regional Hospital

For the ninth straight year, CHI Memorial has once again been named a Best Regional Hospital by U.S. News and World Report.  On the list of Best Hospitals in Tennessee, CHI Memorial is ranked number three behind Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville and Methodist Hospitals in Memphis.  Only 11 of Tennessee’s 136 hospitals meet U.S. News’ standards and are ranked. In addition, CHI Memorial received the number one ranking for hospitals in Chattanooga.

CHI Memorial also received a ‘high performing’ rating in 13 surgical procedures and chronic conditions evaluated by U.S. News: COPD, colon cancer surgery, heart attack, heart bypass surgery, heart failure, hip replacement, kidney failure, knee replacement, leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma, lung cancer surgery, prostate cancer surgery, stroke, and TAVR.

5-Star Rating

CHI Memorial has received a five star rating, out of a possible five stars, from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). CHI Memorial is one of only five hospitals in Tennessee to achieve a five star rating. Only 15.7 percent of the 3,076 hospitals rated received a five star rating in 2023. 

The overall rating shows how well an individual hospital is performing compared to other hospitals in the U.S., on average. The overall rating, between 1 and 5 stars, summarizes a variety of measures across 5 areas of quality into a single star rating for each hospital. The 5 measure groups include: mortality, safety of care, readmission, patient experience, and timely and effective care. Gold Plus Stroke Award

The American Heart Association and American Stroke Association recognized CHI Memorial Hospital Chattanooga and Hospital Hixson with the 2023 Get With The Guidelines® - Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award quality achievement award for its commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines, ultimately leading to more lives saved and reduced disability. Hospitals receiving Get With The Guidelines® Gold Plus Achievement Award have reached an aggressive goal of treating patients to core standard levels of care as outlined by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association® for 2 consecutive calendar years or more. In addition, those hospitals have demonstrated compliance to an additional level of quality during the 24-month or greater period.

Leapfrog Grade 'A'

CHI Memorial Hospital Chattanooga and Hospital Hixson both received an “A” Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade for fall 2023. This national distinction recognizes CHI Memorial’s achievements in protecting patients from preventable harm and error in the hospital. 

CHI Memorial Hospital Chattanooga has received consistent “A” ratings since Fall 2020.  This is the fourth consecutive “A” rating for CHI Memorial Hospital Hixson.  Learn more

CHI Memorial has been named one of the nation’s 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals™ according to an independent quality analysis provided by PINC AI™ and reported by Fortune .

American College of Cardiology’s NCDR Chest Pain - MI Registry Award

CHI Memorial has received the American College of Cardiology’s NCDR Chest Pain  ̶  MI Registry Gold Performance Achievement Award for 2023. CHI Memorial is one of only 56 hospitals nationwide to receive the honor.

The award recognizes CHI Memorial’s commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of care for heart attack patients and signifies that CHI Memorial has reached an aggressive goal of treating these patients to standard levels of care as outlined by the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association clinical guidelines and recommendations.  Learn more

CHI Memorial has been named a Top General Hospital nationally by The Leapfrog Group.  The Leapfrog Top Hospital award is widely acknowledged as one of the most competitive awards American hospitals can receive. The Top Hospital designation is bestowed by The Leapfrog Group, a national watchdog organization of employers and other purchasers widely acknowledged as the toughest standard-setters for health care safety and quality.  More than 2,200 hospitals were considered for the Top Hospital award. American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer Accreditation

In 2021, the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons granted three-year approval with commendation to the cancer program at CHI Memorial. Approval by the Commission on Cancer is given only to facilities that voluntarily commit to providing the highest level of quality in cancer care. Facilities must undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance.

Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation

CHI Memorial's Weight Management Program is a Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP®) Center.  A bariatric surgical center achieves accreditation following a rigorous review process during which it proves that it can maintain certain physical resources, human resources, and standards of practice. Laboratory Accreditation

CHI Memorial Hospital Chattanooga and Hospital Georgia have been awarded accreditation by the Accreditation Committee of the College of American Pathologists (CAP) based on results of recent on-site inspections as part of the CAP’s Accreditation Programs. This is the gold-standard in laboratory accreditation.

Lung Care Accreditation

CHI Memorial's lung program has been designated as the first Lung Center of Excellence within Catholic Health Initiatives and CommonSpirit Health. This 3-year lung accreditation program was designed to provide the roadmap for creating high quality, comprehensive lung programs and contains 26 standards to meet for accreditation.

Cardiac Rehabilitation Program Certification

CHI Memorial's cardiac rehabilitation program is certfied by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR).  This certification is recognition of CHI Memorial’s commitment to improving the quality of life of patients by enhancing standards of care.  Learn more.

Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) Center of Excellence

CHI Memorial was recognized as a Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) Center of Excellence for FY20 CHI’s National Cardiovascular Service Line. The recognition program is designed to optimize the care delivery for one of the highest volume, high risk and high cost cardiac procedures. Evaluation standards were selected by the physician members of the Cardiac Surgery Clinical Standards Committee and focused on three domains of care; quality, stewardship, and patient selection. Within each domain, thresholds for the standards were established using national benchmarks primarily from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons STS Registry. Only two other CHI facilities received the designation - St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma, Washington and Bethesda North Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio.
