Quality and accreditations

CHI Memorial is nationally recognized for excellence in quality and is accredited by The Joint Commission, an independent not-for-profit organization that evaluates and accredits health care organizations and programs.

Accredited by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer

In 2017, the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons granted three-year approval with commendation to the cancer program at CHI Memorial. Approval by the Commission on Cancer is given only to facilities that voluntarily commit to providing the highest level of quality in cancer care. Facilities must undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance.

Bariatric Center of Excellence

The Surgical Weight Management Program at CHI Memorial is deemed a Center of Excellence by the American Society for Bariatric Surgery. To earn and maintain a Center of Excellence designation, CHI Memorial's Surgical Weight Management program underwent a series of site inspections by the Surgical Review Corporation during which all aspects of the program's surgical processes were closely examined and data and health outcomes were collected.

Best Regional Hospital

CHI Memorial is once again the only hospital in the Chattanooga area to be named a Best Regional Hospital by U.S. News & World. CHI Memorial is honored to be a part on an elite group of hospitals that received a ‘high performing’ rating in all nine surgical procedures and chronic conditions evaluated by U.S. News: colon cancer surgery, lung cancer surgery, COPD, heart failure, heart bypass surgery, aortic valve surgery, abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, knee replacement and hip replacement. CHI Memorial is one of only 29 hospital in U.S. to achieve this designation.

Four Star Rating

CHI Memorial actively participates in Hospital Compare a quality reporting initiative of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Hospital Quality Alliance, a public-private collaboration established to promote reporting on hospital quality of care. CHI Memorial shares data with Hospital Compare related to the treatment of adult patients who receive treatment for heart attack, heart failure or pneumonia, or patients having surgery. 

Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) awarded CHI Memorial with a four star rating. The most common overall hospital quality star rating is three stars, out of a possible five stars.  Only 24 percent of the 4,573 hospitals included in the survey received a four star rating.  CHI Memorial scored at or better than the national average in mortality, patient experience, and effectiveness of care. CMS updated its hospital compare overall hospital quality star rating data in February 2019. It was last updated in December 2017.

NRC Health Consumer Loyalty Award

The Consumer Loyalty Awards are the first, and only loyalty-based hospital rankings in the U.S. To qualify for the NRC Health Consumer Loyalty Awards, a hospital must receive at least 150 Top of Mind mentions on the Market Insights Internet-based survey, which measures the opinions, behaviors, and profiles of more than 300,000 consumers annually in more than 300 markets across the U.S. Additionally, ranking organizations must earn extraordinarily high composite scores on the seven aspects of the NRC Health Loyalty Index: access, brand score, engagement, need, motivation, experience and Net Promoter Score (NPS). The facilities across the country with the top composite scores are awarded.

Becker’s Healthcare named CHI Memorial as one of the “100 great hospitals in America”.  According to Becker’s, hospitals included on this list have been recognized nationally for excellence in clinical care, patient outcomes, and staff and physician satisfaction. These institutions are industry leaders that have achieved advanced accreditation and certification in several specialties. The list also includes industry innovators that have sparked trends in healthcare technology, hospital management, and patient satisfaction
