The surgical weight management program at CHI Memorial accredited as a Comprehensive Center in Bariatric Surgery with Obesity Medicine Qualifications by the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP®), a joint Quality Program of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS). CHI Memorial has been accredited by the MBSAQIP since 2012. To earn MBSAQIP Accreditation, CHI Memorial met essential criteria for staffing, training, facility infrastructure, and patient care pathways, ensuring its ability to support patients with obesity. The center also participates in a national data registry that yields semiannual reports on the quality of its surgical outcomes and identifying opportunities for quality improvement. This means that you have access to some of the most effective weight-loss surgery options in the region, as well as a highly trained medical staff that truly cares about helping you lose weight.

For patients who are dangerously overweight, we offer multiple effective weight loss procedures, including:

  • Gastric Bypass: A powerful metabolic procedure that produces biological and hormonal changes that counter the body’s natural biological drive to prevent weight loss. Its major effect is biological pushback on ingested food and a metabolism “reset,” allowing substantial weight loss and a lower, healthier weight set point.
  • Sleeve Gastrectomy: A newer form of metabolic surgery in which a portion of the stomach is removed. What remains of the stomach is a narrow tube or “sleeve” which retains its natural connection to the intestines. Its major effect is biological pushback with mild mechanical restriction of ingested food.
  • Gastric Band: A mechanically restrictive procedure that places an adjustable silicone band around the stomach. Its major effect is mechanical pushback on ingested food.

Jaime Ponce, M.D., is medical director of CHI Memorial Weight Management Center and has been practicing bariatric surgery since 1998. He has extensive experience with gastric bypass, laparoscopic adjustable gastric band, gastric sleeve procedures, endoscopic procedures and revisional surgeries. Non surgical

CHI Memorial's non-surgical weight loss option includes appointments with a registered dietitian and licensed clinical social worker (LCSW). The licensed clinical social worker supports you in managing the personal and social changes required to sustain a lifestyle change. The registered dietitian will discuss your health goals and will work with you to develop a personalized weight loss plan. For more information, call (423) 495-2256.
