Advanced cancer care to heal the whole person

Buz Standefer lung center

The Buz Standefer Lung Center at CHI Memorial is this region’s best and only comprehensive lung center, offering the most advanced detection capabilities, interventional procedures and surgical treatments for lung-related diseases.

Millions of people are living with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The human lungs are complex and highly evolved organs that are essential to life. And while medical science has developed a deep knowledge of their function and related diseases, important research continues relentlessly and new insight is gained every day.

Lung cancer care is extremely complex because most patients need surgery, radiation and chemotherapy – or a combination of all three – to provide lifesaving treatment. And when it comes to lung cancer, coordinated care can mean the difference between life and death. That’s why CHI Memorial’s Buz Standefer Lung Center brings together a team of experts including interventional pulmonologists, radiologists, dedicated lung pathologists, thoracic (lung) surgeons, and medical and radiation oncologists to attack the cancer from every side.

The good news is that you don’t have to leave this community to get the best and most advanced care available in the fight against lung cancer and other breathing related diseases like asthma, emphysema, chronic bronchitis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

No matter your health concern, our team of highly trained professionals and award winning nurses provide a comprehensive care plan that’s individualized just for you.

Quality matters

Buz Standefer Lung Center was established based on a comprehensive, multidisciplinary team approach to diagnosis, treatment planning, surgical intervention and recovery in a holistic manner.

  • Our philosophy centers on you as an individual, with special attention given to appropriately simple and direct communication at every step that you and your family can understand.
  • That team approach includes weekly cancer conferences where related specialists participate in a comprehensive review of patient cases, a thorough exchange of ideas, and in-depth discussion of treatment options and modalities. And since using low-dose CT screening for identifying lung cancer in high risk patients, more cancers are being treated in earlier stages.

Based on a number of professionally recognized and respected parameters, the Center and its staff rank among the elite lung care facilities nationally, and the in-patient nursing staff have received national recognition for patient satisfaction.

Additional support

At the Buz Standefer Lung Center, you’re a person first and a patient second. That’s why we offer services that help you with every aspect of your cancer treatment. And it’s why your care begins with a nurse navigator. Equal parts trusted guide, tireless advocate, and skilled professional, your nurse navigator is there for you every step of the way.

  • CHI Memorial also offers several pulmonary rehabilitation opportunities for lung cancer patients. “Healthy Lung Express” is a quick lung tune-up, often in preparation for surgery, while more intensive pulmonary rehab is recommended after surgery and includes exercise, education and nutrition counseling. Our postoperative care includes a multidisciplinary team of nurses, respiratory therapists and pulmonary rehabilitation therapists who are working together to help you build lung strength and stamina.
  • Through CHI Memorial’s Center for Cancer Support, a team of nurses, educators, dietitians, chaplains and social workers offer free services to all cancer patients and their families. We’re always at your side. Call (423) 495-7778 for more information on cancer support services. Learn more about CHI Memorial’s Centers for Cancer Support below.
