Robotic-Assisted Surgery

Advances in robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgery mean patients have more treatment options than ever before. 

Several surgeons on staff at CHI Memorial use the da Vinci® Xi robotic surgical system, the most advanced robotic-assisted surgical technology available. Designed to further advance the technology used in minimally invasive surgery, the da Vinci system puts the surgeon’s hands at the controls to perform even the most complex and delicate procedures through very small incisions – with unmatched precision. 

Even though it’s called a robot, the surgeon is in full control of the da Vinci surgical system at all times. The system cannot be programed, nor can it make decisions on its own. It requires the skilled hands and judgment of a trained surgeon. Additionally, there are sensors on the machine that ensure the robotic arms move only when the surgeon's eyes are viewing the console display. 

Using laparoscopic instruments and high-definition 3-D imaging, surgeons using the da Vinci surgical system can perform intricate procedures with greater precision, improved visualization and depth perception, and enhanced dexterity.
