MaryEllen Locher Breast Center

The MaryEllen Locher Breast Center is a Center of Excellence and is accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR®) and the National Quality Measures for Breast Centers (NQMBC). Our center provides our region with a full spectrum of clinical and support services.

Why choose a comprehensive center?

Comprehensive breast centers voluntarily undergo detailed examination of processes, quality indicators, and treatment plans to ensure that they are providing the best possible, most up-to-date care. Most physicians and clinicians practicing at centers of excellence eagerly seek additional training to remain at the forefront of advances in breast care.

The MaryEllen Locher Breast Center consistently meets or exceeds all quality standards of care, meaning you can rest assured the most advanced treatment options are available to you. And, unlike other breast imaging facilities, the MaryEllen Locher Breast Center is an all - inclusive center which allows women to go from a screening mammogram to a complete diagnostic work up in one appointment. While most women will never need the full range of services we offer, the few who do will have peace of mind in knowing they are in good hands. Our multidisciplinary team of professionals provide the best possible care while minimizing the time from finding a breast concern to diagnosis and treatment.

Screening options

The x-ray evaluation is recommended every year for women over 40 years of age when there are no signs or symptoms of breast disease. Women 35-40 should receive a screening mammogram.

Diagnostic mammography provides additional projections and spot magnification and may be recommended following a routine mammogram if there is a new finding or concern.

Tomosynthesis creates a three-dimensional image of breast tissue to more effectively pinpoint the size, shape and location of any abnormalities. With tomosynthesis, a series of images from multiple angles are converted into a single 3D image that can be viewed in different ways. This allows our radiologist a more complete picture of the breast, improved visibility, and increased ability to size and stage masses. It also improves cancer detection in women with dense breasts.

Dedicated Breast MRI provides unparalleled and uncompromising image quality, patient comfort, and efficiency to better evaluate conditions that may not be visible with other imaging methods.

Ultrasound imaging is a painless medical test that uses high frequency sound waves to evaluate breast tissue.

Removal of tissue for examination under a microscope may be necessary for diagnosis.

A bone density test is the only accurate way to diagnose osteoporosis, assess fracture risk, and monitor the effects of treatment.

MaryEllen Locher legacy

Established in 2007, the MaryEllen Locher Breast Center was inspired by the local television news anchor and health reporter who courageously battled breast cancer. As a result of her personal experience with cancer, MaryEllen pledged to make the breast cancer journey easier for all women. Working alongside CHI Memorial, she provided insight and inspiration for the development of a breast center that would combine the best possible medical care in an atmosphere of calm and understanding. Reducing the time between diagnosis and treatment was MaryEllen’s primary goal. Although MaryEllen ultimately lost her battle to cancer in 2005, her legacy lives on in the thousands of women whose lives have been touched by the center which bears her name.
